According to RMC Sport, if the French national team becomes the world champion, the team’s forward Karim Benzema, who will not be able to play at the World Cup in Qatar due to an injury, will also receive a gold medal.
The striker of Real Madrid was injured during the Roosters’ training and therefore cannot compete in the World Cup. It should be noted that Benzema is the first active winner of the “Golden Ball” after 44 years, who cannot play in the World Cup. The last time a similar case happened at the 1978 World Cup, when Alan Simonsen from Denmark won the “Golden Ball” in 1977, but his team did not make it to the World Cup.
FIFA announced that since the French did not call a replacement for Benzema in the national team, Karim remains a member of the team. Therefore, if the gold medals are won by the French national team, one of the 26 will go to Karim.
The French national team made it to the 1/8 finals of the World Cup after 2 rounds of the group stage. Didier Deschamps’ team leads Group D with 6 points after defeating Australia (4:1) and Denmark (2:1).
