Boca Juniors became the 2022 champion of Argentina. Hugo Ibarra’s team was able to win the championship in a dramatic battle in the last round.
Let’s say from the beginning that before the last round, Boca Juniors had 51 points, its rival and closest follower Racing - 50. Boca hosted Independiente on its own field and did not win - 2:2. The hosts were losing first, then took the lead with the goals of Guillermo Fernandez and Sebastian Villa, but the guests equalized in the 81st minute and Bombonera was silent.
Now it all depended on a parallel match in which Boca’s rivals Racing hosted Boca’s arch-rivals River Plate, who for their part had no championship ambitions but were fighting for third place and Marcelo Galliardo was also in charge for the last time.
The half ended goalless, and at the start of the second half, Racing coached by Fernando Gago, Rojas took the lead with a penalty. The hosts were leading until the 80th minute, when Miguel Borja equalized the score. However, the main events were to come: in the 90th minute, Racing could have taken the lead when they won a second penalty kick. Rojas was no longer on the field, that’s why Sebastian Galvan came to the ball, but Franco Armani beat him! Two minutes later, Borja scored a double on the counterattack and River won 2:1, making Boca the champion!
Thus, the 2022 season of the Argentine championship ended fantastically and Boca Juniors became the champion of Argentina for the 35th time in history.
